Description

Turnberry Lighthouse and the Keeper's Houses were built in 1873 for the Northern Lighthouse Commissioners by engineers D & T Stevenson.

The lighthouse features a tapering circular-section tower made of painted brick. It has a string course below the top upper courses, which curve out to support a concrete cap that holds an iron lantern. The lantern has triangular-paned glazing and a domed top with a plain iron railing around the cap. Small rectangular windows spiral around the tower, following the staircase, and there is a door on the southeast face next to the link block, which has a doorcase with painted quoins.

The Keeper's House is a two-storey, two-bay main block with a flat roof, constructed of brick and featuring a cornice and blocking course. It has short chimney stacks in pairs at the east and west ends, with the principal elevation facing south and comprising six bays. To the east, there is a single-storey, one-by-two-bay flat-roofed wing with tall chimney stacks on the south and east elevations. To the west, there is a lean-to wing with a corrugated iron roof and a pair of doors in the west elevation, along with a base course.

The houses are connected to the tower by a two-storey flat-roofed block that has a house door on the east face, which is treated as the lighthouse door. Additionally, there is a later flat-roofed single-storey building to the northeast. The tower and houses are enclosed within an iron railing on a masonry dwarf wall. To the east, there is a walled enclosure that contains a pair of coal cellars made of masonry and brick.
