Description
The South Courtyard Pier at the Fullarton Estate is a pair of classical pedestals that date from the late 18th century, around 1790, and are possibly designed by Robert and James Adam. These pedestals were originally part of a quadrant screen that flanked the forecourt of the now-demolished Fullarton House and are located to the north of the stables. They are constructed with whitewashed harl and feature sandstone ashlar dressings. Each pedestal has a square-plan plinth with rusticated outer angles, topped by a square-plan pedestal that includes engaged, fluted Doric columns at the outer angles. The front of each pedestal has a niche with scallop carving beneath an arched pediment that features a consoled keystone, while the rear has a plain, square-headed niche. The pedestals are crowned with a full Doric entablature that includes decorative metope carving and consoled brackets supporting a square-plan, corniced pedestal that serves as the base for an urn finial.
