Kirkton Church

Kirkton Church, built in 1841, features porch and chancel additions made by John Robertson between 1904 and 1906. It is a rectangular, gable-fronted church with three bays, an advanced pinnacled porch, and a birdcage belfry on the west gable. The east side has a gabled chancel and a vestry. The church is constructed from whinstone rubble with polished ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and an eaves course. The pointed-arch windows have raised margins and timber tracery, while the chancel has stone tracery.

The entrance consists of a two-leaf timber-boarded door with strap hinges, set within a roll-moulded pointed-arch in the gabled porch, which has side pinnacles and a cross-finial at the apex. There is a hood-moulded window on the principal gable behind the porch. The side elevations also have three bays. The gabled chancel on the east has a lower gabled vestry that is set at right angles to the right side.

The church features coloured leaded lights in fixed timber windows, with ashlar-coped skews and cross finials on the additions, and a ball finial on the east gable. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has an ashlar ridge, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the nave has a trussed timber roof, while the chancel features a trussed and boarded roof. The nave includes timber panelling up to dado height and sloping window cills, along with Art Nouveau gasoliers.

The graveyard is enclosed by coped rubble boundary walls, with spear-headed gates at the southwest corner, likely from the mid-19th century, and a mounting stone nearby. Gravestones, primarily from the late 18th and 19th centuries, are located mainly to the south, east, and west of the church.
