Description

The cottages at 2 Bogend Farm, Bogend, date from the earlier to mid-19th century, with later alterations. They are a range of single-story cottages with attics, originally arranged in five paired blocks stepped up the sloping site, forming a Z-shaped plan with a lower range linked by a gateway. The cottages are constructed of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, with droved sandstone dressings. The rear is of harl-pointed rubble. Features include droved quoins, droved surrounds to openings, sandstone mullions to bipartites, and projecting cills, some of which are painted. Numerous box dormers are present throughout the roofscape. A single-story, three-bay ancillary structure is attached to the east.

The southeast (entrance) elevation of Nos. 1 and 2 presents a near-symmetrical block with timber doors in the penultimate bays on either side, a single window to the outer left, and a bipartite dormer above. Bipartite windows are at ground level flanking the centre, with aligned bipartite dormers above. Nos. 9 and 10 mirror this arrangement, but with a single ground-floor window to the outer right and a single dormer to the outer left. The southwest (side) elevation of No. 1 has a single window centered at ground level, while No. 9 has a single window in a gabled bay to the outer right, another to the outer left, and an aligned bipartite dormer above. The northwest (rear) elevation of Nos. 1 and 2 has a single-story, lean-to addition centred at ground level, small single windows in flanking bays, and steps leading to timber doors in the outer bays. A bipartite dormer is present in the outer left bay. Nos. 9 and 10 have a similar addition, but without the dormer.

The southwest (entrance) elevation of Nos. 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8 is symmetrical in pairs, with timber doors in the penultimate bays to the outer left and right, single windows in the outer bays, and aligned bipartite dormers above. Bipartite windows at ground level flank the centre, with aligned bipartite dormers above. The northeast (rear) elevation has single-story, lean-to additions offset to the left and right of the center; three garage openings on the left; timber doors and single windows in the remaining bays to the left and right.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 8-pane glazing, although some are casement or modern. Grey slate roofs are present, with raised skews and replacement rainwater goods. Stepped and corniced brick ridge and apex stacks rise from the roof, topped with various circular cans. The interiors were not inspected in 1998.

The ancillary structure is constructed of sandstone rubble with droved long and short red rubble dressings. The southeast (entrance) elevation has boarded timber doors in all bays, and a grey slate piended roof. The interior was not inspected in 1998. Plain iron railings enclose the site.
