Description
Skirling House, designed by architect Ramsay Traquair, was built in 1905 for Lord Carmichael. The house was constructed around an existing farmhouse and features a part weatherboarded upper floor, which reflects influences from the southern coast of England. It includes some interesting wrought-iron work by Thomas Hadden of Edinburgh and has small pane glazing along with a slate roof.
Inside, one room boasts an Italian ceiling that originally hung in the small drawing-room of Castlecraig.
The Gardener's House is an 18th-century single-storey rubble cottage that underwent alterations in 1821, which are dated, and had a porch and rear elevation added around 1907. It was converted into a woodstore around 1970 and is located to the rear of the main house, facing the road. The cottage has a slate roof and a variety of timber windows.
The Summer House is a timber single-storey pavilion built in 1907 with a rectangular plan. It is situated to the southeast of the main house and was originally open-fronted but was altered shortly after its construction. The floor features a 'spider and fly' cobble mosaic, and it has a slate roof.
There is also a stone barn, possibly from the 18th century, which has a lean-to addition and slate roofs.
The boundary walls consist of a rubble dwarf wall along the road, complemented by a fine timber fence and gates.
