Description
The Exedra at Traquair House was built around 1738 for Charles Stuart, the 4th Earl of Traquair, also known as the 10th Laird. It underwent remodelling in the mid-19th century. The structure features a pair of arched walls made of random rubble that end in cylindrical piers, which were originally topped with statues. These walls and piers now have very thin flat copes that are turfed and seeding.
On the northeast elevation, the pair of arched rubble walls flank the end of the formal avenue and overlook the Wineglass Lawn. Each pier was formerly topped with a classical statue of a draped nude female, but only the statue on the northwest pier of the south exedra remains.
