Description

This is a two-story, three-bay former manse, dating from 1770, with later 19th-century additions. The building has a rectangular plan and a symmetrical facade. The front (east) elevation features a central, corniced doorpiece with pilasters, a timber panelled door, a five-pane rectangular fanlight, and wide, prominent three-light canted windows on either side. Earlier 19th-century bipartite windows are arranged on the first floor, with a painted and glazed blind window in the centre and to the left. A crowstepped coped gablet sits centrally above the entrance, with a former chimney stack at the apex. The building is cement rendered with red sandstone dressings.

The north side elevation has a plain gable end representing the original 18th-century house, alongside a two-story, two-bay 19th-century extension. The west (rear) elevation is double-gabled, with a wider gable to the right, and four bays at ground floor level. A first-floor window is positioned off-centre to the right. The south side elevation features an 18th-century gable end with ground and first-floor windows to the left, next to a two-story, two-bay 19th-century extension and a canted dormer from the early 20th century.

The roof is pitched, covered with grey slates, and features straight stone skews from the 18th century, coped ashlar gable end stacks, and circular clay cans. Predominantly plate glass is found in timber sash and case windows, with four-pane timber sash and case windows for the central light of the canted windows.

Inside, there is a cantilevered stair with decorative cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail, located at the centre of the plan. This stair originally served an external tower, subsequently incorporated into the 19th-century rear additions. A flagstone pantry is also present.

A single-story, L-plan steading is attached. The northeast stable block dates to the later 18th century, while the southwest block includes a barn, cartsheds, and a bothy at upper floor level, added in the later 19th century. The 18th-century block is constructed with narrow squared snecked red sandstone rubble and droved sandstone rybats, while the 19th-century block is of random red sandstone rubble. The stable retains original boarded timber stalls and fittings and a cobbled floor. The south elevation of the steading has three bays, with two arched cartsheds, now in-filled with aluminium garage doors to the right, and a door to the left. The east elevation has six bays with eight-pane timber sash and case windows and timber boarded doors.

Tall, random rubble, coped walls enclose the front garden and separate it from the former glebe grounds to the rear, running north and south of the house. A lower drystone wall extends further north.
