Description
This is a large, mid-19th century farm steading range built around a courtyard, with alterations in 1997 by Morris and Steedman Associates. The complex includes a farmhouse, several cottages, and a detached former byre. The buildings are constructed of squared and snecked red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and are set within the wider landscape of the Garvald House estate (listed separately).
A prominent feature is the pedimented archway, topped by a pyramidal-roof bellcote. Smaller, semicircular openings are positioned close to the eaves flanking this archway. The farmhouse has a slated timber porch and spear-headed garden railings. A further range of four cottages has pedimented dormers breaking the eaves to the south. To the north is a piended engine shed with a long horizontal opening set close to the eaves, supported by cast iron columns.
The detached barn, fronting the roadside to the east, is a large, roughly eight-bay rectangular structure, formerly a byre and threshing mill. It has a corbelled pigeon loft with twelve open stone pigeon boxes at the south gable end, with a consoled cornice to the opening below. The gable displays an irregular arrangement of openings, with loft level windows close to the eaves. Evidence of surviving threshing machinery remains, including parts of the former lade system adjacent to the west elevation.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with grey slate roofing. Coped ridge and end stacks have clay cans, and cast iron rainwater goods are present. The original ball finial from the bellcote is currently located on the ground near the archway. This farm complex forms part of a group value context with Garvald House, its former stables, coach house, walled garden, and lodge (listed separately). The building represents an important example of its type in the area, reflecting the estate’s development in the 19th century.
