Description

The site comprises an extensive mill and farm complex with several buildings of varying dates, mainly from the late 18th century, and with later alterations and additions. The original mill buildings and granary cartshed are situated to the west, alongside a farmhouse, an implement shed, and a byre that forms a courtyard to the southeast. The buildings are constructed of whinstone rubble, with the mill harled and the house rendered with sandstone dressings. Roofs are slate, except for pantiles on the courtyard elevation of the implement shed, and there are brick repairs visible in places.

The farmhouse is a two-storey, three-bay L-plan building. The southeast (entrance) elevation features an advanced gabled bay with swept eaves on the outer left side, a modern timber and glass porch in the re-entrant angle, and a stair window above. A single window is located to the outer right. The northwest (rear) elevation has single windows to three bays. The southwest elevation presents an advanced gabled bay on the outer left, with windows at ground and first floors offset to the right, and a single window to the outer right. A single-story, pitched-roof outbuilding adjoins the northeast gable. Small pane sash and case windows are present throughout, along with brick gablehead stacks.

The mill is a substantial two and three-storey rectangular block running northwest to southeast on a sloping ground. It has irregular, asymmetrically disposed openings, some surviving small windows with timber lintels, jambs, and small-pane glazing. There are later ground-floor openings on the southwest side. A hoist door is centrally positioned on the first floor to the southwest. The remains of the original waterwheel are located to the northwest, now a blank elevation with a dried-up lade channel. The southeast elevation features two-storey bays, an ashlar coped skew and a further coped skew to the southeast gable, a piend-roof to the northwest, rooflights, and a gabled timber roof ventilator.

Inside the mill, timber columns support a boarded floor on each level, and a bagger remains in situ. A door and gablehead leading to the second floor is accessible from higher ground to the southeast.

The cartshed and granary, also on sloping ground, runs northeast to southwest and is linked to the mill at the north angle. A later brick lean-to is situated in the re-entrant angle, obscuring the left bays of the northwest elevation. The building features two cartbays with timber lintels to the right, with granary openings above, one shuttered and one louvred. The roof has a gabled elevation to the northeast and a piended roof to the southwest, with rooflights. The rear elevation is blank and abuts rising ground.

The byre, stables, and implement sheds are single-story blocks grouped in an irregular plan to form or enclose the courtyard. The implement sheds have a carriage opening to the southwest with timber jambs and lintels, replacing what were possibly timber piers. Outer elevations are blank, partially obscured by higher ground to the south. A rectangular block running northwest to southeast encloses the courtyard within an irregular polygonal block facing the road. This building has small six-pane windows, doors to the south and southwest, is blank to the north, and has a gabled north elevation and a piended roof to the south, with swept slate ridge ventilators. A small stable block is located to the northeast.

The interior of the byres has concrete trevises and whitewashed walls.
