Description
Upper Greenside is a building that possibly dates back to the 16th century. It is a tall single-storey structure, which was formerly two storeys, and consists of two parts that may have served as a former laird's house and chapel. The building features a brick-vaulted ceiling and an east window in an ecclesiastical style with a pointed arch. The exterior is constructed from random rubble with red sandstone dressings, some of which are droved.
On the north elevation, there is a taller bay to the left with an off-centre right door at ground level and a tall window, which may also be a door, to the left on the first floor. There is a small square blinded opening to the right, and a further door in the broader bay to the right. All openings are timber-blocked unless otherwise stated.
The east elevation has a gabled design with a rubble dividing band and a tall pointed arch window on the first floor, along with a block finial at the gablehead, which may be the base of a former finial.
The south elevation features a broader bay to the left with a square window that has been altered from a door, located off-centre right at ground level, and a tiny square opening to the left. There is a slightly recessed bay to the right of centre with a square window on the first floor to the left and a small square window to the right, indicating evidence of an almost full-height gabled building to the outer right.
The west elevation is an altered gabled design with a large sliding door to the left and a projecting stone in the gablehead. The windows on the south and east elevations have fixed glass bricks, and the roof is made of corrugated plastic. The building has a coped ashlar stack with ashlar coped skews and block skewputts on the east and centre, while the west has concrete skews.
Inside, the eastern part of the building features a tall pointed brick-vaulted ceiling that is keel-shaped. The east elevation of the dividing wall includes a part droved sandstone lintel above a fireplace opening on the ground left and a doorway to the right. On the first floor, there is a sandstone lintel and uprights for a fireplace located off-centre right, along with a narrow doorway to the left.
