Barn, Cellardyke, Deerness

Cellardyke in Deerness is a house dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan and a single-storey lean-to byre along the rear (east) elevation. The structure is built of roughly coursed rubble. To the northwest of the main house is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan barn that is asymmetrical, constructed of random rubble.

On the east (principal) elevation of the dwelling house, there is a boarded door in the central bay, with a window in each flanking bay. The rear (west) elevation has a boarded door in the centre of the lean-to addition, a large boarded window to the right, and a window to the left. The south (side) elevation features a window set to the left at ground level, with an attic window above and a gablehead stack. There is a boarded door with a window flanking it in the lean-to addition to the outer left. The north (side) elevation includes a boarded loft door at the gablehead, with a gablehead stack above, and a boarded sliding door in the lean-to bay to the outer right.

The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, although some are missing, and there are small rooflights on the south pitch. The roof is covered with graded stone slates, featuring a stone ridge, squared rubble, corniced gablehead stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the dwelling has a flagstone floor, with fireplaces at both the east and west ends, large stone lintels, and a temporary timber staircase at the south end. The byre also has a flagstone floor, a central slurry channel, concrete stall divisions along the east wall, and a timber hay rack along the north wall.

The barn's east (principal) elevation has a wide door, formerly sliding, offset to the left of centre, and a boarded door with a small window flanking it in the bay to the right. There are small rooflights on the east pitch, and the roof is covered with graded stone tiles, featuring a stone ridge and coped skews.

Inside the barn, there is a cement floor, exposed timber rafters and tie beams, and a timber floor division with a timber access stair to the northern half of the barn.
