Description
The Masonic Hall, located at 23-27 Hope Street in Motherwell, was designed by J Cowan in 1900. This three-storey building features a five-bay, rectangular plan with an M-gabled roof and showcases late Greek Revival architectural style. The front is constructed from red ashlar sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of brick. There are dividing bands between the floors.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a broad entrance with steel shutters in the outer left bay, flanked by narrow blocked openings that have lugged cavetto moulding. Above the entrance, there is a block pediment with a framed shield device at the center. The upper storey features giant order pilasters, with a bipartite window above that has a stone mullion, and a single architraved window on the first floor. Beneath the bipartite window, there is a rose-en-soleil device on the second floor, and a pediment breaks the eaves above, with framed panels on the plinths displaying Masonic devices. The capitals of the pilasters also break the eaves. The right side has regular fenestration, with a door at the center of the ground floor and blocked windows flanking it. The second storey has a continuous plinth supporting pilastered bipartite windows with stone mullions and projecting corbels above. The third storey features bipartite windows, with piers rising to coped wallhead stacks.
The northwest (rear) elevation has irregular fenestration and includes a cast-iron emergency staircase. Both the southwest and northeast side elevations are harled gable ends. The building has boarded or missing panes in the steel window frames, grey slates with lead flashing, and coped gable end stacks, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, there is a galleried meeting hall on the first floor, which was not seen in 2001.
