Description

The Thornlie Parish Church Manse, located at 6 West Thornlie Street, Wishaw, was designed by Alexander Cullen and built in 1902. It is a two-storey, four-bay asymmetrical manse characterized by full-height canted window bays and stylized castellated details. The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked grey sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. A battered cope appears on both the gable and window bays.

The principal (south-west) elevation features a stone flight leading to a stop-chamfered doorpiece with a bracketed lintel, a deep-set panelled timber door, and a curvilinear incision above a stone mullioned two-light window. Paired narrow windows are found on each floor of the bay to the right. A canted gabled window is positioned to the left, with an arrow slit in the apex above. Similar blind slits with shaped caps are incorporated into flanking wellheads.

Timber sash and case windows with four-pane upper sashes are present throughout. Stained glass is found over the door lights and in the central first-floor windows, as well as a stair light to the rear. Casement windows are located in the central bay on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring ridged coped skews, coped ashlar, a tall wallhead, red clay cylindrical cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative attachments, culminating in a shaped, dated hopper on the south-west side.

The interior showcases "Glasgow School" white-painted timber fixtures and fittings. Original leaded and stained glass, also designed by Alexander Cullen, features a color scheme dominated by red, purple, and turquoise, with predominantly stylized “Glasgow” roses and single leaf tendrils. The front floor entrance includes pilasters with stylized capitals flanking the door, a timber panelled door featuring a leaded and stained glass design (originally a shield motif, though two panes have since been removed), a keystoned cornice above, and a flanking small-paned light with a similar design. The stair window incorporates a transomed design with an elliptical design linking two sections, featuring paired “Glasgow” roses above stylized tendrils and leaves. The first-floor sitting room contains a purpose-built timber display cabinet with a tripartite stained glass frontage, stylised drip moulded pilaster terminals, flanking pilasters, and a round arched timber dividing screen with pierced decoration. An original fire surround is located in the ground floor sitting room. Other original features include stained glass overdoor lights to the main front door, cut fleur-de-lys motifs on some internal doorframes, original brass door handles and escutcheons, and original window latches.
