10 Hamilton Terrace, Lamlash, Arran

17 Hamilton Terrace in Lamlash, Arran, is a terrace of 27 single-storey and attic houses designed by Sir John James Burnet in the late 19th century. The houses are arranged in pairs with central doors, and number 27 serves as a post office. The exterior is harled with a steeply pitched slate roof that sweeps down to the eaves. The doors are boarded and feature multi-pane fanlights. The ground floor windows consist of 12-pane sash and case designs for houses 17 to 22 and 26, while other houses have multi-pane canted windows. Some original glazing remains in houses 1 to 3, 12, 14, 23, and 24. The cat-slide dormers have paired 6-pane casements, with original glazing in houses 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, and 17 to 23. However, some windows have been replaced with out-of-character uPVC or plate glass.

The gables feature half-timbering with jettied sections and plain bargeboards above the ground floor in houses 2/3 and 24/25, as well as at the left and right returns. The tall harled ridge stacks have oversailing brick coping and uniform squat cream cans.

On the left return gable, there is a door flanked by canted windows and a modern window in the attic. The right return gable has a tripartite projecting window, a single window, and a casement in the attic, all retaining their original glazing.

The rear elevation includes original single-storey kitchen bays with cat-slide roofs that extend in pairs to houses 1 to 24, while houses 25 to 27 have been altered. The cat-slide dormer windows match those on the front elevation, with most retaining original glazing. The stacks rise through the pitch of the roof like the ridge stacks.

The interior has not been seen, except for the post office, which features original boarded walls, a counter, and security grilles.

In front of the terrace, there are two rectangular garden enclosures, now partly a car park on the left. These enclosures are made of stugged squared rubble with round-coped, massive domical-capped piers at the center angles. Between the enclosures stands a modern monument to the Arran clearance emigrants, consisting of three standing stones.
