Description
1, 2, 3, and 4 Dallas Dhu Cottages date from 1898 and were likely designed by Charles Doig, in connection with the Dallas Dhu Distillery. They are constructed with a red brick ground floor and dummy timber framing at the first floor. The entrances are located in the outer bays, and cottages 1 and 4 feature gabled, timber-boarded porches. Each cottage has a large, segmental-headed window on the west (front) elevation. A two-window gabled dormer appears on the east roof slope, with two smaller dormer windows on the west slope. A variety of glazing patterns are visible. The roofs are jerkin-headed and slated, with red pottery ridges. Each pair of cottages has a square brick chimney stack on the ridge. The interiors have been refurbished and are plainly detailed, as shown in photographs.
Exclusions from the listing include single-story brick additions to side and rear of the cottages, and a separate laundry building to the west.
Dallas Dhu Distillery, originally named Dallasmore, was built in 1898 to designs by Charles Doig and funded by Alexander Edward. It was one of two distilleries on the Sanquhar estate. The distillery was sold in 1899 to Wright & Greig Ltd, a Glasgow blending company, and production began on 29 May 1899, with the first barrel filled on 3 June. The distillery has changed ownership several times and experienced periods of inactivity during the First and Second World Wars and the economic depression of the early 1930s. Unlike other distilleries, Dallas Dhu was not rebuilt or expanded during the 20th century and ultimately closed on 16 March 1983. Following its closure in 1987, the distillery was transferred to the Scottish Ministers and subsequently sold to a private owner in 1997, remaining under the guardianship of the Scottish Ministers.
