Description
Oxenfoord Bridge is a single-span bridge dating to around 1800. Constructed with harled random rubble, it features ashlar copes and pink sandstone ashlar voussoirs for the segmental arch. The north and south principal elevations show sloped offsets with plain abutments supporting the segmental arch, featuring projecting imposts and an architvolt to the extrados. Partially harled rubble wing walls are present, topped with flattened stone copes, though some replacements are of grey concrete. The east and west elevations consist of sloped wing walls leading to a tarmac roadway uphill, which then flattens onto the bridge.
The bridge is now out of use and sits adjacent to a modern structure carrying traffic on the A6093, the main route to Pencaitland and Haddington. The boundary between the parishes of Cranston, Midlothian and Ormiston, East Lothian lies beyond the bridge. The bridge presents a plain design compared to other bridges in the area and was built before a major road construction phase in the parish. It's located near the site of what was the home farm of the old Oxenfoord Castle, though it was not part of an estate. References to the bridge appear on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of 1856 and in Rev J Dickson’s “Cranstoun: A Parish History” (1907) on page 145.
