Description
2 Lingerwood Cottages in Newtongrange are mid to late 19th century cottages arranged in two terraces forming an L-shape. They are single-storey, three-bay cottages built in symmetrical mirrored pairs, featuring two central canted windows and contemporary outshots at the rear. The cottages are constructed from sandstone rubble with some squared dressings, while the rear is harled.
On the southwest and west (front) elevations, each cottage has a central door with a fanlight, some with steps leading up to them. To the left of the door is a window, and to the right is an advanced ashlar tripartite canted window. The pattern of windows continues from the left cottage through each terrace. The gable wall of No 1 on the west side is plain stone, and the gable wall of No 12 on the south side also features plain stone with evidence of a removed outshot.
The northwest and east (rear) elevations show a central, adjacent outshot for each cottage, with irregular fenestration and rear doors. The east gable of No 4 is harled, while the northeast gable of No 5 is plain stone.
The cottages predominantly feature four-pane timber sash and case windows, with some two-pane windows. Many of the windows have been replaced with uPVC. There are also some rear flat-headed dormers and rooflights. The roofs are gabled with grey slate, and the rear outshots are piended, featuring lead ridges and overhanging bracketed eaves. Raised skews are present between Nos 8 and 9. End cottages have gable stacks, while shared central ridge stacks are found elsewhere, along with some replacement stacks, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen in 1999. A sandstone rubble boundary wall runs along the front of the cottages, topped with rubble ridged coping stones, and one metal garden gate remains.
