Description

East Parish Church, located on Church Street in Cromarty, is an early 17th century low rectangular church that features harled walls. Around 1740, a north aisle was added, creating a T-shaped plan. The church has three small porches, built in 1848, at each gable, with the eastern porch incorporating a vestry. A bellcote from 1799, adorned with stumpy pinnacles at each corner, is also present. The church has plain square-headed windows on the ground floor and in the galleries, along with two early 18th century rounded-headed windows that have later Gothick astragals, which flank the pulpit on the south wall.

The roof is slate with a stone ridge and ball finials. Inside, the church has a simple early 18th century design, featuring pews in the aisles and galleries located to the east, north, and west. The eastern Cromartie aisle showcases a classical front with a Doric entablature and fluted Ionic columns that support a wide segmental arch. The rear has plain pilasters and piers. To the west is the simpler Scholars' Loft, which has a panelled breast. The plain north gallery, dating from the mid-18th century, is marked with the years 1741 and 1788, along with the initials of some early pew occupants. The joists are bare, with some studded with long nails used as hat pegs. All woodwork is made of pine, with traces of green paint found in the west gallery and some re-used painted boards. The pulpit was added in 1915.
