Description

38 Argyle Square in Wick is a terrace of two-storey, predominantly two-bay, rectangular-plan gabled townhouses designed by Thomas Telford around 1840. The buildings face south onto Argyle Square and are constructed from squared and tooled, long coursed Caithness stone slabs. The fenestration is regular, while the side elevations are obscured by adjacent buildings, and the rear features irregular fenestration.

The principal elevation of No. 35 has a door to the left and a large modern canted dormer to the right. No. 36 has a door to the right and a small gabled dormer to the left, with concrete roof tiles. No. 37 features a door to the left and a small gabled dormer to the right, also with concrete tiles. No. 38 is a three-bay structure with a door to the right, a window to the outer right, and a pend to the far left, all covered with concrete tiles. No. 39's principal elevation is finished with concrete tiles.

No. 40 has a door to the right, a base course, and ashlar margins around the openings, along with rooflights and concrete tiles. No. 41 is a three-bay building with a central door, a blocked pend to the left, and a window to the right, featuring a projecting margin to the outer left window and a pend to the outer right, with roof lights and concrete tiles. No. 43 is also three-bay with a central door and blind openings to the right bay. No. 44 has a door to the left, and No. 45 has a door to the right, both with concrete tiles.

No. 46 features a door to the left, blocked openings to the outer left, and a small modern flat-roofed dormer to the right, with a blind gable end on the east side. No. 48 is a symmetrical three-bay structure with harled finish, a base course, and corner quoins. It has a central door with flanking pilasters and a cornice hood above, projecting margins to the openings, and a pedimented ground level, with a blind gable end to the west. No. 49 is also a symmetrical three-bay building with harled finish and projecting margins to the openings, featuring a central door, a small square window above, and a large modern picture window to the right. The east elevation, facing Lower Dunbar Street, has a modern shop entrance at ground level.

The interiors were not seen in 2001. The buildings feature modern plate glass sash and case windows, grey slates with lead flashing, rooflights, skews, coped gable stacks with string courses, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
