Description

11 and 12 Newton Terrace in Glasgow is a classical terrace block built around 1864-1865. It is three stories tall with a basement and features raised and advanced central and end sections. The building has 52 bays arranged in a pattern of 3-18-10-18-3. The front is made of painted ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the ground floor, while the rear is constructed of squared stone.

The end sections are three bays wide and have canted bays that rise through all three stories, topped with flat tripartite windows. The ground floor has a cornice, and the second floor features a mutule cornice. The central bay includes a lugged architraved entrance, with a consoled window above it, and a second-floor window also with a lugged architrave and a corbelled cill.

The lower 46 bays have coupled entrances with architraves and a mutule cornice. The first-floor windows have a dropped cill band and are ramped, architraved, and corniced, while the central section's second-floor windows have corbelled cills. There is an eaves cornice and a continuous parapet with piers, although the parapet has been removed at Granville Street. The building features ridge and gable stacks and has a slate roof.

The elevation facing Elderslie Street is four stories tall with five bays, and the first bay from the north is blind. It has a basement band course and an entrance with ramped, lugged architraves and a cornice. The first-floor windows are corniced, and the second-floor windows have corbelled cills, with a cill band at the third floor. The windows mainly have 12-pane glazing, and there are two corniced wallhead stacks, with the southernmost stack reduced in size.

The elevation facing Granville Street mirrors the Elderslie Street elevation but lacks a parapet or stacks.

Inside, the building features vestibules with consoled arches and coffered ceilings. The rear of the ground floor includes a columned and pilastered top-lit commercial hall. There are cast-iron railings in the front area, some of which are modern, and a low retaining wall to the north of the original private access road.
