Club, 5, 7 Ashley Street, Glasgow

The building at 27 Ashley Street in Glasgow is a club that dates back to around 1850 and consists of three pairs of classic semi-detached villas. Number 23 was demolished and replaced in 1924 by a red ashlar building.

The original villas are classic in style, featuring three bays, two stories, and a basement. They are constructed of polished ashlar, which is mostly painted. Each pair of villas has Ionic porches at the terminal bays, with steps leading up to deeply recessed architraved panelled doors. The ground floor windows are architraved and corniced, while the first-floor windows are simply architraved. The windows are sash style, with either plate glass or 12-pane glazing. The main cornice is plain, and there is a blocking course. The buildings have corniced axial stacks, some of which have octagonal flues, and they are topped with slate roofs. The flanks and rear are made of coursed rubble.

The replacement building at number 23, dated 1924, features polished red sandstone and is two stories tall. The centre bay of the facade is advanced and taller, topped with a pediment. It has five windows at the ground level, flanked by architraved doorpieces that have a bracketed cornice and double-leaf panelled doors. Above the doors on the first floor, the windows are set in recessed moulded architraves, corniced, and feature bold keystones. There is a heavy cornice above the windows and a deep parapet. The centre bay includes large three-light windows, with pilaster mullions that support a heavy transom. The windows are sash style, with either lying pane or small pane glazing.
