Description

Trinity Congregational Church, located at 71-73 Claremont Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Honeyman in 1864 and showcases a late decorated gothic style. The church features a nave, chancel, and transept, along with a southeast tower and spire. The exterior is constructed of coursed ashlar stone with a squared rubble rear elevation and a raked plinth.

The elevation facing Claremont Street includes an arched entry at the top of a short flight of steps, ribbed and supported by colonettes. It has two 2-light windows adorned with curvilinear tracery. There is a porch and a polygonal turret at the re-entrant angle of the nave and transept, as well as three hoodmoulded loopholes and a carved cornice. The roof is a pepper pot design with geometric slate. The double gable transept features diagonally buttressed overlapping cope and two 3-light arched windows with curvilinear tracery.

On the north return, there is a plain liturgical east window in the shape of a vesica. The elevation facing Berkeley Street has a single gable with two 2-light hoodmoulded windows and two buttresses topped with curved decoration. A rose window and a 5-bay blind arcade can be found below the southwest gable. There is a modern addition to the west.

The tower and spire consist of a three-stage tower with angle buttresses. The second stage features coupled loops that break through a continuous hoodmould. The bellcote stage is bipartite and includes tracery, while the broached ashlar spire has shallow lucarnes and clasping pinnacles.

Inside, the church has partially altered arcaded transept screens with carved colonettes, a west gallery on the south side, and a pierced hammerbeam roof. The east window contains stained glass.
