Description

11 Professors' Square is a building designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1868 and 1871, with a porch for the Principal's Lodging added by Honeyman & Keppie in 1898. This structure consists of three stories, an attic, and a basement, forming terraces of townhouses for twelve professors and the Principal around three sides of a square. The design reflects the Early Netherlandish style with 16th-century Scottish details. The exterior features rock-faced rubble with ashlar dressings and a ground-level band course. The windows are stone-mullioned and transomed, arranged as single, bipartite, and tripartite configurations. The entrance bays have crowstepped gables, predominantly paired, and there are bargeboarded gabled dormers.

On the south side, which includes the Principal's Lodging, there are five bays with the outer bays raised and advanced, showcasing irregular fenestration and crowstepped gables. This side has two dormers and return elevations with central gables and arched entrances. The rear elevation features a double gable, with the eastern section advanced and a full-height canted bay. The west side comprises fifteen unequal bays, with the 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, and 15th bays advanced, each topped with crowstepped gables. Arched entries have continuous dripmoulds above the window lights, arranged in a specific pattern. The first floor features shaped 2-light attic windows in the gables, while the return and rear elevations are plain. The north side has twelve bays arranged in a 2-2-4-2-2 pattern, with the 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 10th bays raised and advanced, displaying paired crowstepped gables similar to the west side.

The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case, and the roofs are covered with grey slate. The gables are corniced, and there are mutual stacks.

The interiors, as seen in 1988, are mostly plain and have undergone many alterations. Notable features include carved timber staircase balusters and some timber or marble chimneypieces.

The carriage steps consist of approximately 150mm thick sandstone slabs that form pavements and roofs for coal cellars, with circular cast-iron coal-hole gratings. Sandstone slabs extend over the stone road gutters to create the carriage steps.

Decorative cast-iron railings are present along the street and steps over the basement areas, accompanied by cast-iron lamp standards featuring a barleysugar motif integrated into the railings.

The boundary walls are buttressed and coped bull-faced sandstone walls located at the rear of Nos. 5-11.
