Description

Gartloch Cottages, designed by Thomson and Sandiland around 1892, is a symmetrical terrace of ten cottages in the Arts and Crafts style, located at 2280 Gartloch Road, Glasgow. The cottages are 1-2 storeys high and feature half-timbered gables and dormer heads, with a combination of snecked rubble and ashlar dressings. They have mullioned windows, slate roofs, and deep eaves on the gables and dormer heads, which include barge boards with slightly protruding purlin ends. Broad banded stone chimney stacks are present, along with cast iron railings in front of the gardens and a brick garden wall that includes coal sheds at the rear.

The front elevation consists of 20 bays at ground level, arranged in pairs with doorways flanked by bipartite windows for each cottage. The gabled end bays rise to two storeys, with the first floor slightly advanced on corbels and featuring three small windows in a half-timbered panel. A small cast-iron bell-shaped light fixture is positioned at the angle. The central two bays are gabled like the end bays, with the first floor also slightly advanced on corbels, and contain a pair of bipartite windows in a half-timbered centre panel. The roof has a 4-light dormer, a single dormer, and another group of dormers with a further 4-light dormer flanked by single dormers.

The side elevations are plain, featuring a 1.5-storey gabled bay with a single window on the upper floor. At the rear, there is a single-storey brick lean-to with a small window, and the garden wall extends to the coal shed.

The rear elevations show some alterations, with single windows at ground level and end bays gabled like those at the front. There are brick, semi-detached lean-to porches for the central cottages, topped with broad 6 small-light swept dormers. Two single dormers are located to the left of the centre bay, while two on the right have been removed. The brick garden wall has stone coping, and the coal sheds feature wooden coal-hole doors (some of which have been removed) and wooden doors in the rear garden wall.
