Description
215 High Street in Glasgow is a narrow, asymmetrical two-bay, three-storey tenement building, designed by William Forest Salmon FRIBA and completed in 1895. It features Edwardian Renaissance details and was originally built as a bank on the ground floor, which is now a shop. The building has a long return elevation to Nicholas Street, which is partly single storey. It is constructed from polished red sandstone with a polished pink granite basecourse.
On the High Street elevation, there is a roll-moulded door to the right, above which is a four-light corbelled canted oriel window on the first and second floors, adorned with a decorative over-lintel featuring a leaded oculus. To the left, there is a basket-arched tripartite window and round-arched bipartite windows on the first and second floors. All windows are sash and case with plate-glass glazing. The left side has a stepped gable topped with a statue at the apex, while the right side features a balustraded parapet with a lead ogee-domed tempietto.
The Nicholas Street elevation has a two-bay return that matches the main High Street facade. To the right, there is a single storey and attic irregular mews wing with shouldered windows and a stepped gable. A bronze plaque on the site commemorates the house of the poet Thomas Campbell, who lived from 1777 to 1844.
