Description
3 Woodside Place in Glasgow is a notable building designed by architect George Smith in 1838. It features a long, symmetrical terrace with classical details, consisting of two storeys and attics over a basement. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, with a channelled design at the ground level, and some areas have been cleaned of dirt.
The building has paired Greek Doric porches that lead to a shallow, advanced three-storey centre and terminal pavilions. There are steps that oversail the basement, leading to doors with pilastered reveals and fanlights, most of which have consoled cornices. The upper floors have architraved windows, with cornices at the first floor and consoled cornices at the pavilions. The windows are sash style with plate-glass glazing.
A continuous band course runs along the ground and at the first floor cills, along with an eaves course and cornice. There is a partial roof balustrade with die pedestals and a blocking course at the pavilions. The building features axial stacks with octagonal flues set below the ridge, which are plain above, and has slate roofs. The basement area is enclosed by spearhead cast-iron railings, with modern railings at either end.
The flanks of the building, which face Elderslie Street and Woodside Crescent, have a similar level of detail and consist of five bays. The interiors of Nos 1 and 2 have been modernized, and the flank of No 1 on Woodside Crescent has been rebuilt at least at the ground floor. There is a curved single-storey addition to the rear, which is also modern and pilastered. Additionally, there is a former coach-house located at the rear of No 28, which features a pedimented gable facing Elderslie Street, and a public house situated in the basement.
