Description

This is a block of classical terrace houses built between 1842 and 1856 by Brown and Carrick. The terrace is located on Sandyford Place, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, and has undergone alterations, particularly around the centre and eastern end.

The main section of the terrace comprises mostly three-bay houses, though numbers 1 to 19 are two storeys with a basement. Numbers 7, 8, and 9 form a raised central three-storey section with a basement, featuring a channelled ground floor and an eaves balustrade. The appearance of numbers 3 to 6 has been altered and extended circa 1983, accommodating the Glasgow Eye Infirmary, designed by Burnet, Tait, and Lorne. Numbers 20 to 27 are three storeys, rising to four at the eastern end, with a basement and 20 bays overall. These feature Roman Doric column porticos.

Most windows are sash and case, set within architraves, although the Glasgow Eye Infirmary section features metal-framed casements. The original entrances are at the head of flights of stone steps, framed by ramped architraves and cornices.

The central section (numbers 7-9) has dropped architraves, moulded cills, and aprons on the first floor and a cill band on the second. The second floor windows have margined detailing. The elevation is finished with an eaves mutule cornice, a blocking course, set-back dormers, and end stacks.

Numbers 10 to 19 have two storeys and a basement. Number 10 features thin Ionic columns flanking its doorway. The original entrances are framed by ramped, lugged architraves, cornices, pilasters, and fanlights. The first floor windows have dropped architraves, aligned to a ground floor band. The basement is built with droved ashlar, with coped dividing walls, and has consoled arches in the vestibules.

Numbers 20 to 27 are distinguished by porticos with a triglyph frieze at numbers 20 (covered), 22, 24, and 26, with pilasters and a frieze at alternate close entrances. The ground floor has a cornice, partially featuring mutules. Tripartite, stone-mullioned windows are located in the 1st, 7th, 8th, and 14th bays from the east. These windows are pedimented and consoled on the first floor, and consoled and corniced on the second floor; other windows have cornices on both the first and second floors. Moulded cill bands are present on the first and second floors. The elevation is finished with ridge and end stacks, and set-back dormers.

The elevation to Elderslie Street is four storeys with modern shops at ground floor level. Bays 1 and 8 from the north are blind. A cill band is present on the first and second floors, and the elevation is finished with an eaves cornice and wallhead stacks, with scrolled cornicing on the first bay from the north.

The elevation to Claremont Street is four bays wide, with three storeys. The second, third, and fourth bays from the north are blind on the first floor, and the first, third, and fourth bays are blind on the second floor. It is finished with a corniced wallhead stack.
