Ruchill Hospital Staff Cottage, 500 Bilsland Drive, Glasgow

Ruchill Hospital Staff Cottage, located at 502 Bilsland Drive in Glasgow, was designed by Alexander Beith McDonald in 1892. The building features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a base course.

The former staff villas at 506 and 548 Bilsland Drive are a pair of two-storey, L-plan villas in the Flemish Renaissance style, which flank the now-demolished former gate lodges. A brick garden wall is present at the rear.

The north elevation of the staff cottage is handed and consists of three bays. The ground floor includes a four-light canted bay on the gate side, which has a bracketed blind parapet, with a mullioned bipartite window above and a shaped gable. There is also a mullioned bipartite window at ground level with a cat-slide roof, gabled on the return, while the outer bay is recessed with a single window at ground level. A doorway is located in the re-entrant above the base course, with steps leading up and elaborate iron railings.

Additionally, the former staff cottages at 490, 492, 500, 502, 554, 556, 562, and 568 Bilsland Drive consist of four pairs of symmetrical semi-detached single-storey cottages, with two pairs flanking each staff house, also in the Flemish Renaissance style. A brick garden wall is present at the rear.

The north elevation of these cottages features six bays, with twin shaped gables at the center that include a mullioned bipartite window and a blind key-hole motif above. The gables are flanked by doorways with steps and railings, and there is a single window in the end bay.
