Description

The Wolfson Centre at the University of Strathclyde, built between 1969 and 1972 by architects Morris and Steedman, is a five-storey building with a basement, designed for the bioengineering department. It features a square plan and is notable for its full-height ribbed chevron-shaped white reinforced-concrete cladding panels. This building is part of a post-war university campus situated in an urban environment. It includes banded bronze-coloured spandrel panels and bronzed 'spectrafloat' glazing positioned between the cladding. The entrances are adorned with chevron cladding panels above the lintels, with two-leaf glazed entrance doors on the south elevation and a pair of entrances at the basement level on the north elevation, one of which has a later timber and glazed entrance door with a glazed canopy. There are also a pair of entrances on the west elevation. The roof features an aluminium cope and a square-plan plant room clad in white galbestos corrugated material.

Inside, as observed in 2011, the internal walls are primarily made of painted aerated concrete blocks. The building has a circulation core at the center, which includes a reinforced-concrete straight stair and a lift. The external cladding ducts are faced with painted timber. The floor slab is coffered reinforced concrete, and there is a double-height entrance lobby with a ribbed timber gallery on the first floor. Some areas have been subdivided in late 20th and early 21st century renovations. The windows are timber-framed casements with bronze-coloured 'spectrafloat' glass and top-hopper openings, and the roof is flat with bituminous felt.
