Description
2B Kirklee Road is a mid-19th century asymmetrical villa that underwent extensive remodeling and additions by architect J J Burnet around 1900. The building features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, situated on a steeply sloping site. It is constructed from stugged and snecked ashlar and includes a distinctive tower and turret feature on the northwest side, with a steeply pitched roof and plain barge-boarded gables. The windows have chamfered margins.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is a symmetrical three-bay design with a gabled bay at the center. It boasts an elaborate glazed wrought-iron porch over a tripartite doorpiece, which is adorned with carved bands around a round arched fanlight. The entrance is flanked by leaded glazed sidelights and features an oak door. To the left, there is a single-storey bow window covered with fish-scale slates and cast-iron brattishing above. The remaining windows are single-light.
The west elevation also has three bays, with the tower feature on the left rising to a squared parapet topped with a turret roof. A bow window on the right extends from the basement to the ground floor, and there is a bipartite window in the gable. The north flank is irregular, showcasing a variety of window shapes, including a leaded oculus. At the base of the tower, a twin arch arcade provides access to the kitchens at the basement level.
The east elevation includes a two-storey addition from 1900, which houses a billiard room. This addition is gabled and features a deep parapet. The windows exhibit mixed glazing, with plate glass sashes in the original windows and small pane leaded or coloured glazing in the 1900 windows.
Inside, the villa presents a good interior with a glazed tripartite vestibule and screen. The timber stair balusters are complemented by elaborately carved newel posts, and the panelled hall features a plaster frieze and dentil cornice. There are also elaborate timber chimneypieces, some designed in the art nouveau style. The billiard room is notable for its coved plaster ceiling and an elaborate Renaissance-strapwork plaster chimney-breast.
The property is further enhanced by a pair of cylindrical ashlar gatepiers topped with conical caps and small ball finials, along with a low coped ashlar wall surrounding the garden.
