Description
The Albany Annexe of Woodside Public School, located at 44 Ashley Street in Glasgow, is a building likely designed by H & D Barclay around 1875. It showcases a Renaissance villa style and features a lower wing at the rear, along with a 1902 extension to the south. The structure consists of two storeys, attics, and a basement, constructed from polished ashlar stone, which is channelled at the basement level.
The main facade is three bays wide, with a prominent central entrance bay. Steps lead up to a distyle Roman Doric porch, which has a coped parapet above. Above the porch, there is a single architraved window. The ground floor windows are also architraved and flank medallions featuring high relief sculpted heads. The first-floor windows are arranged in groups of three, recessed within a common architrave and separated by pilasters adorned with foliate capitals. The flanking sections of the building are treated similarly, but the first-floor windows are set behind a six-bay pilastrade. The south elevation is altered by the 1902 addition, which features a three-pane glazing pattern. A continuous heavy string course runs above the ground floor, with a heavy band course at the first-floor cills. The eaves course includes a painted mutule cornice topped with a central pediment, and there are wallhead stacks decorated with scroll and anthemion motifs. The roof is piended and covered with slate.
The rear wing is two storeys high and has a single store aisle. It is also made of polished ashlar and features chamfered windows. The architraved baroque doorpiece has an open pediment supported by consoles and a bold keystone. The upper storey includes mullioned windows, with the eaves supported on brackets.
The 1902 addition to the south is broadly similar to the original structure but is simpler in detail. Its facade facing Carnarvon Street features a pediment with a 1902 datestone. The school yard is enclosed by a low boundary wall that supports attractive cast-iron railings and gates.
