Description

55 Hamilton Drive is a terrace of classical houses designed by Robert Crawford between 1857 and 1859. The building features two bays and includes a three-bay flatted pavilion at the western end. It has two storeys and a basement, with the pavilion rising to three storeys and a basement.

The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, while the rear elevation is made of squared rubble. The windows are sash and case style, set within architraves and featuring four-pane glazing. The entrances are accentuated with console cornices at the top of the steps, and there are die walls that oversail the basement area. To the left of the entrance, there is a tripartite window, and on the first floor, there is a cill band with a console corniced tripartite window in the right bay, along with a similar single light window above the entrance. The building is topped with a cornice and a balustraded parapet.

On the western bays, the central entrance is also console corniced and is flanked by tripartite windows. The first floor features a cill band with console bracketed windows, and there is a second floor cill band as well. The eaves cornice adds to the architectural detail.

The western return elevation consists of five bays, with the second return bay from the north being blind. There is a central console corniced entry to the upper flats, and the first-floor windows are also console corniced. A cill band is present on the second floor, and there is a wallhead stack. The slate roof features axial stacks, and the front gardens are terraced with die balustrades and corniced gatepiers.
