Description
11 Buckingham Terrace is a terrace building designed by J T Rochead between 1852 and 1854. It features Renaissance details and consists of advanced and raised flatted pavilions arranged symmetrically. The houses numbered 2 to 15 are three-storey with basements and have three bays, while numbers 3 and 4 are combined. Numbers 1 and 16 are five-bay flats with upper floors accessed from side streets.
The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with the ground floor channelled and rusticated long and short angle quoins at the pavilions. The rear elevation is made of droved ashlar. Each entrance features panelled doors with sidelights, positioned at the top of balustraded steps that oversail the basement area. The entrance to number 4 has been altered to a window, and the steps have been partially removed.
Most windows are sash and case, with four and six-pane glazing, and there are architraves above the ground floor, which are lugged in the pavilions. Each house has a console-bracketed first-floor balcony with a cast-iron parapet, which is broken in the centre bay by a canted window. The eaves cornice is also notable. The slate roof is piended at the end blocks.
The east and west returns have twelve bays, with the second and third return bays being blind and similarly detailed. Close and main door entries are located at the top of steps with cast-iron railings. The building features a corniced wallhead and axial stacks, along with cast-iron railings on the basement parapet and boundary walls.
