Description

2 and 4 Hillhead Street in Glasgow is a three-storey and basement classical terrace of four houses, designed by William Clarke of Clarke and Bell in 1856. The terrace features a long arrangement of 47 bays, organized in a pattern of 7-32-8, with central windows arranged in a 1-3-3-1 configuration. The northern end block is raised to four storeys and projects outward, while the southern end block is also raised.

The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with the ground floor channelled and partly painted. There is a band course at ground floor level. The sash and case windows are set within architraves, primarily featuring four-pane glazing. The first floor has a bracketed, balustraded balcony in the central bays, although this has been partially removed. The central bays on the first floor include a dentil band and cornice, while the second floor has a plain entablature, a dentil cornice, and a balustraded parapet.

On the northern section, the first and second floor windows are corniced, with corbelling at the second floor. The northern return consists of five bays, with the second bay being blind. There is a corniced doorpiece to No. 2 that is set back. The building has a slate roof with corniced axial stacks.

Inside, there is a stained glass door featuring the Good Samaritan and interior work by Charles Gow and his pupils.
