Description
2 and 3 Royal Terrace in Glasgow is a classical, three-storey and basement flatted terrace built in 1845 and later. The building features five-bay end pavilions and is constructed of polished ashlar, which is partly painted and channelled at the ground floor. The upper floors have sash and case windows set in architraves, with 12-pane and 4-pane glazing, and plate glass, while the rear has 12-pane glazing. Each entrance is located at the top of steps that oversail the basement area, with panelled doors leading to most entrances. There is a basement band course, and the end pavilions have fluted Greek Doric doorpieces, while the eastern bays feature seven coupled Ionic doorpieces, and the western bays have coupled anta doorpieces.
Notable architectural features include full-height, four-light canted bays with central cast-iron column mullions at Nos 16 and 17 and 18 and 19. The first-floor windows are set on a cill band and are either corniced or have console cornices with aprons, topped by a main cornice and a parapet over the end bays. There are single and two-light dormers with pedimented heads above Nos 16-19.
The elevation facing North Claremont Street consists of 15 bays arranged in a 5-5-5 pattern, with the five northern bays raised and detailed as the main elevation, featuring a central Greek Doric portico. Ionic columned porticos are present at Nos 11 and 17. The first-floor windows have ramped, lugged architraves and are corniced, while the second-floor windows are plain architraved.
The elevation to Kelvingrove Street has four bays, with the second bay from the north being blind, and it repeats the detailing of the main elevation. There is a corniced doorpiece at No 66. The building has a slate roof with corniced axial stacks and features elaborate cast-iron railings at Nos 16-19.
