Description
72 Highburgh Road in Glasgow is a terrace of ten two-bay houses built around 1874. The buildings are two storeys high, with attics and basements, and feature polished ashlar stone that has been cleaned, although some doorpieces are painted.
Each two-bay facade has steps leading to doorways that are framed with architraves, supported by consoles, and topped with cornices. The doorways have double-leaf panelled storm doors, and above each door is a single light window with an architrave. To the left of the door, there is a two-storey canted window that rises from the basement, corniced over both floors and featuring a blocking course at the first floor. The windows are sash with plate glass glazing. A band course runs along the eaves, and there is a plain cornice. The dormers are architraved with pilasters that support an arched pediment set into a deep panel parapet, with a surviving terminal die pedestal at number 66. Most dormers have four-pane glazing. The roofs are slate, with cornice axial stacks and mostly octagonal cans. There are plain cast-iron railings leading to the steps and basement, although these are missing at number 82.
The flank facing Hyndland Street has a three-bay design, with all windows being single light and architraved. The main cornice features a deep parapet and two dormers with pediments.
The rear elevation is made of stugged ashlar and alternates between two-storey canted windows and tripartite windows at the ground and first floors, with bipartite windows in the attics.
The vestibule doors are tripartite, with glazed sidelights and fanlights, some of which have acid-etched glass, such as at number 78.
