Description

3 Kew Terrace in Glasgow is a classical terrace designed by architect J T Rochead in 1849, consisting of 20 houses arranged in a 3-bay format with shallow advanced, 6-bay central and terminal pavilions in a 6-21-6-21-6 layout. The terrace is two storeys high with attics and a basement, while the pavilions rise to three storeys. The exterior features polished ashlar stone, which is partly painted or cleaned.

Access to the houses is via steps that oversail the basement, leading to doorways with architraved consoles and cornices. The doorways are paired at the pavilions but have individual flights of steps, with doors that have pilastered reveals and fanlights. The ground floor windows are roll moulded, while the first-floor windows are architraved and aproned, with the pavilions featuring consoled cornices and segmental pediments over the central two bays. The third-floor pavilion windows are also architraved. The sash windows are either plate glass or have 4-pane glazing. Additional architectural details include a band course at the first floor, a string course above the second floor, a modillion cornice, and piended dormers.

The pavilions have continuous cast-iron balconies supported by cast-iron brackets, with a string course at the eaves and a bracketed cornice. The buildings have axial stacks, some with octagonal flues, and feature good cast-iron railings leading to the steps and basement. The polished ashlar flanks consist of three bays each, with the first bay treated as the main facade, while the other bays have small, irregularly placed windows. The rear of the terrace is finished in droved ashlar.

Notable features include a circa 1900 door at No. 6 and a carved oak front door at No. 19. Additionally, No. 17 boasts fine mahogany panelling on the ground floor.
