Description
1 Fitzroy Place on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow is a classical terrace building designed by John Burnet Senior around 1847. It is two and three storeys high with a basement, featuring a total of 51 bays arranged in a pattern of 5-18-6-17-6 facing Sauchiehall Street, and a 5-bay return to Claremont Street. The ends of the building are raised by one storey. The facade is finished in painted ashlar, with droved ashlar on the rear elevation and basement, and ashlar dividing walls. Most of the windows are sash and case, all set within architraves.
The eastern end section has five bays, with a central tripartite pilastered doorpiece and two similar doorpieces in the outer bays of the centre and western end. The central bays feature architraved, corniced doorpieces, which are coupled at Nos 16 and 17. There is a cill band, moulded cills, and aprons to the ground and first-floor windows, the latter being corniced. The building has an eaves cornice and a parapet, which is partially removed, along with axial corniced stacks.
On the Claremont Street elevation, the second bay from the north is blind, and the central corniced doorpiece has been altered to a T-pane casement window. The south ground floor window has been modified to serve as an entrance. Original cast-iron railings are present, and there is a lettered stone on the Fitzroy Place Lane elevation inscribed with 'GLASGOW BOTANIC GARDEN, INSTITUTED 1817'.
Inside, notable features include a leaded glass door at No 10, created by Oscar Patterson around 1906, and a hall screen with a full entablature at No 8.
