Description
Carron Lodge is an asymmetrical villa comprising a late 18th century, 2-storey former farmhouse with a long, 8-bay single-storey 1901 Arts and Crafts extension designed by local architects James Gillespie and James Scott. The extension, which runs south towards the Kinness Burn, is positioned in front of the earlier farmhouse, which stands at the northeast corner.
The late 18th century farmhouse portion is constructed of white painted rubble, whilst the later Arts and Crafts addition is finished in white painted harl with contrasting black painted margins. The east (entrance) elevation of the Arts and Crafts addition features a long piended roof and a distinctive off-centre circular entrance porch with a low wall and six short timber columns supporting a steeply conical roof crowned with a ball finial. Two-leaf timber entrance doors lead into the house. To the south of this elevation is a single advanced bay with outbuildings set at right angles.
The west elevation shows the 2-storey piend-roofed single bay of the 18th century farmhouse to the left, with three single-storey gabled bays to the right, each fitted with tripartite bay windows—those on the outer bays are canted. To the far right stands a 4-bayed columned loggia.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case windows, some with horns. The west elevation contains windows with 12, 15 or 18 panes over 2 panes, while the east elevation features mostly 6 panes over 6 panes. The roofs are covered in graded grey slates. A pair of tall chimney stacks rise from the north elevation, with further ridge and tall chimney stacks on the west elevation.
Interior features seen in 2017 reveal high quality timber decorative detailing in three main rooms within the Arts and Crafts extension and porch. The drawing room contains simplified Jacobean plasterwork, dado height timber panelling, an inset bookcase and part-glazed cupboard, and a marble Adam-style chimneypiece with reeded decoration and central and outer panels depicting classical figures. The dining room is timber lined with a coombed ceiling and a classically detailed columned timber chimneypiece with dentilled detailing. A further room has simple plasterwork decoration to the ceiling and a fire surround. The porch interior is timber lined with a part-glazed internal entrance door and working timber shutters. A curved timber staircase with narrow timber banister is located within the older part of the house.
To the north of the villa stands a long stable block. The eastern section comprises 2-storey, 6-bay stables constructed in sandstone rubble with irregular windows, a hayloft and some iron ties. Some windows are 4-pane lying-pane over 2-pane timber sash and case. The interior, partly visible, retains near intact individual timber and metal stables with hay racks. To the west of the stables are further single-storey outbuildings stepped at roofline. A single storey red brick and timber former garage lies to the northwest.
The garden is enclosed on its north and east sides by high rubble walls with chamfered openings and occasional ball finial details, with the Kinness Burn to the south. To the far west are red brick walls surrounding an orchard. To the northeast of the house is a further section of rubble garden wall featuring a round-arched opening.
The gatepiers and boundary walls to the north on Lower Strathkinness Road are excluded from the listing under Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
