Description
Craigend Steading is a mid-19th century building, possibly incorporating earlier materials, with some minor later alterations. It consists of a range of single and two-storey buildings that form a compact U-shaped courtyard. The structure is built from coursed and random rubble with ashlar quoins, and features segmental-headed openings with voussoirs.
On the southwest range, the lower elevation to the right of the entrance includes a boarded timber door leading to a cart arch and an adjacent door to the right, both positioned left of center. Beyond these, there are two blinded openings. To the left of the entrance is a two-storey bothy or gig house, which has a wide sliding door on the outer left beneath a sloping roof, a blocked segmental-headed window to the right at ground level, and a blinded window above at the center. There is also a single bay with a blocked door on the courtyard elevation.
The northwest range features a courtyard elevation with a two-storey bothy or similar structure to the left, which has a door at the center, blocked windows in the flanking bays, and regular blinded openings at the first floor, all with segmental-headed designs. To the right is a full-height sliding door. This range has a long stepped and piended roofline, with a hayloft opening to the outer left.
The northeast range includes a single bay of the tall northwest range extending to the outer left, which is connected to a single-storey building featuring a sliding door.
The southeast range is a single-storey structure with adjoining cattle courts at the rear. It has a two-leaf door to the left of center, flanked by windows, and an open bay to the outer right supported by cast-iron columns and a timber lintel.
The roofing is made of corrugated asbestos or iron, and the building has ashlar coped skews.
