Description

A late Scots Gothic style church, completed in 1931 to a T-plan design by Peter Sinclair, with an earlier original church now serving as a hall to the rear. The church’s front south elevation is constructed of red sandstone up to cill level, with pink reconstituted stone to the east elevation, and pebbledash elsewhere. The hall is mostly pebbledash with red sandstone porch and dressings. The roof is slate with diminishing courses and terracotta ridge tiles, incorporating ashlar skews. Windows feature rectangular panes with leaded glazing and diffused glass, set within Tudor arches.

The front south elevation comprises five bays, with a Tudor arched entrance positioned centrally, incorporating a hoodmould and merlin details. Flanking the entrance are windows, with further windows and angle buttresses extending to the sides. A string course runs along the elevation, above which sits a five-light window with a hoodmould. Simple inscribed decoration features at the gable, and the skew ends are crenellated.

The west elevation features the church to the right, and a crenellated semi-octagonal bell tower to the left, with a door and two square-headed openings on the ground floor, and three louvred openings above. A gabled transept is positioned to the right, with a tripartite window and doors on each return. Five buttressed bays extend to the far right, featuring three bipartite windows and a single window. To the left of the church is the hall (the original church), linked by a single bay with a window. A three-bay single-storey porch is advanced at the centre, with a door flanked by windows, angled dies, and a central pediment. Above the porch is a 4-light window set within a gable, with angle buttresses and crenellated skew ends.

The east elevation mirrors the west, but without the belltower. The hall features a canted bay in the centre, originally an apse, with a later lean-to addition at ground floor level.

The north elevation has four buttressed bays, three with single windows, a door to the left, and a lean-to addition to the far left.

Inside, the church has a simple design. A narthex features a dado and two doors leading to the nave, with a wide comb ceiling and exposed main structural supports. Tudor arched doors and facings are present, along with a ribbed dado and a panelled chancel area, containing a reredos advanced at the centre of the east wall. The pews have been removed. The hall has an elliptical roof with plain ribs springing from moulded corbels.

The boundary walls are low, constructed of harled brick with stone coping. Two rectangular section ashlar gatepiers with chamfered copes are located on the front elevation, with similar piers on the west and north elevations, and eight other single piers. Decorative metal gates are located on the north and west elevations; the railings have been removed.
