Description

320-322 High Street in Lower Methil is a pair of terraced houses built in the earlier 20th century, designed as local authority housing. These two-storey homes feature crowstepped gables and details reminiscent of 17th century Scottish architecture. The exterior is harled, with stone margins and ashlar quoin strips. There are both segmental and round-headed pend openings, along with moulded doorways that have bracketed cornices and stone mullions.

The northwest entrance elevation is symmetrical, with a slightly advanced crowstepped gable at the center. This gable includes a broad pend entrance flanked by doors at ground level, a segmentally-pedimented window at the first floor, and a blind arrowslit in the gablehead. Each flanking bay has three bipartite windows on both floors, with doors located below the windows and crowstepped gablets beyond. To the left, there is a seven-bay wing featuring a central pend entrance, a blank first floor, and an arrowslit in the crowstepped gablehead. The flanking bays contain bipartite windows on both floors, with paired doors below two narrow lights in the penultimate bays and additional bipartite windows in the outer bays. The right wing mirrors the left.

The west and north elevations also feature a crowstepped gable with a blind round-headed gunloop at the first floor and a gablehead stack. The windows are timber sash and case, displaying various glazing patterns including 8-, 12-, and 16-pane configurations, as well as plate glass, although one property has a non-traditional window pattern. The chimneys are coped harled stacks with cans, and the skews are ashlar-coped with beak skewputts.
