Description
Kilrenny War Memorial, designed by Alexander Murdoch in 1922, is a sandstone structure commemorating those who died in World War I. It is prominently located on open coastal ground between Cellardyke and Kilrenny.
The memorial features a triple-stepped base leading to a three-sided, two-stage section. The lower stage has three panels in low relief that depict a sailor, a soldier, and a wreath with crossed swords. The upper stage contains three panels that name the fallen, along with a dedicatory panel that reads, "ERECTED IN PROUD AND REVERENT MEMORY OF THOSE CONNECTED WITH THE PARISH OF KILRENNY WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 1918."
The stages are separated by large scrolled angle buttresses that support lions holding shields, which depict the Kilrenny Burgh Coat of Arms, a plough, and a steam drifter. The monument is topped with a tall Composite column featuring a polished granite ball finial.
