Description

Private Bridge, Castle Shotts Drive, Falkland

This Grade B listed bridge was designed by John Kinross in 1891-2 as part of the restoration work undertaken at Falkland Palace under the patronage of the 3rd Marquis of Bute. The bridge forms an important component of the wider designed landscape, linking the two estates of Falkland Place and House of Falkland across the public road below.

The bridge is a single-span structure with a semi-circular arch and a gentle hog-backed profile. It is constructed of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar parapet and intrados. The arch features channelled voussoirs, and the design incorporates rusticated buttresses at either side. The parapet is coped with a base course and terminates in square-plan piers at each end.

Adjoining the bridge to the east is a wall and gateway forming part of the boundary of Falkland Palace Estate. The wall is built of coped squared and snecked rubble with a band course. The gateway itself is round-arched with channelled voussoirs and an impost course, and has a two-leaf slatted timber gate which leads to the palace policies.

The stonework is finely detailed throughout. The use of rusticated buttresses and channelled voussoirs links the bridge stylistically to other buildings on the estate. The gentle hump-backed slope of the structure contributes significantly to its architectural interest.

John Kinross (1855-1931) was one of Scotland's leading architects of the period. Much of his later work centred on restoration projects, as exemplified here at Falkland Palace. He benefited from the extensive patronage of the 3rd Marquis of Bute and also carried out notable work on country houses including Manderston in the Borders.

The bridge was erected as part of a private walk connecting the two estates at a time when the 3rd Marquis of Bute, having become Keeper of Falkland Palace and owner of the House of Falkland Estate in 1887, was undertaking substantial restoration work to the palace, which had fallen into considerable disrepair.
