Description

West Mill in Strathmiglo dates from 1824, likely incorporating earlier elements. It is a three-storey, rectangular building with a piend roof, featuring a breast-shot water wheel and an adjoining rectangular kiln and storage areas. The exterior is constructed from snecked pink sandstone rubble, with some dressed quoins and segmental arches supported by voussoirs.

On the northeast elevation, the mill is positioned approximately at the center, displaying a lintel inscription that reads 'JOHN FRASER PERE. TENANT 1824-75. ROBERT A FRASER FILS DO 1875-89'. This is above a boarded timber door that features a reproduction fire-mark stating 'SCOTTISH UNION 1824'. To the left, there is a small door, possibly for grain access, and a cart arch with a two-leaf boarded timber door on the return to the left, accompanied by a small window above. To the right, there is a door leading into a low link section adjoining the kiln, which has a fire opening below a small square window positioned high to the left and a cart arch to the right. The right gabled return includes a door and flanking lights in the gable head. There is a further small store set back to the outer right. The lower store range is set back to the outer left, featuring a cart arch infilled with a part-glazed door on the left, a stable door, and a small window below a timber hayloft door on the right.

The southwest elevation shows the tall mill building and a projecting lower lean-to wheelhouse with a square window to the right. It also includes a low pedestrian entrance and segmental-headed water inlets on both the left and right returns. A lower store extends to the right, with the kiln and store ranges set back to the left.

The southeast elevation presents a broad gabled front with two small windows at ground level. The building features some small-pane glazing, clay pantiles with slate eaves easing courses, and terracotta ridges, along with some ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, there is a four-metre wheel set into a moulded wheel floor, which drives the pit wheel (imported from a neighboring mill), the wallower, and the great spur wheel at the spout floor. Two French burr grinding stones are encased in tuns at the stone floor, with grain being fed from the bin floor above. The kiln drying floor has been updated with modern 3mm steel plates.
