Description
Pitcullo Castle is a late 16th century building originally of L-plan. In the 17th century, a tower was added to the south-east, transforming the south front into a U-plan configuration. The castle is constructed of rubble stone with a stone roof. A corbelled turret stair is located in the west re-entrant angle, while another corbelled turret rises from the south-west corner. A stair turret is centrally positioned on the north side, corbelled to a square and later remodelled in the 18th century with a lean-to roof. The ground floor is vaulted; the eastern half includes a basement.
In 1968, planning consent was granted for the restoration of the original L-plan house and the demolition of the 17th century south-east addition. Prior references to the site, Pitcullo House (recorded by C Wilson in 1852) and a subsequent additional listing, were almost completely demolished and subsequently deleted from records.
