4 Elcho Place, High Street, Cockenzie

1 Elcho Place in Cockenzie is a near-symmetrical terrace of 15 houses built in 1882, designed in a stylised late-Gothic style. The buildings are primarily two-storey blocks, interspersed with single-storey cottages that have attics. They are constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with dressings that are stugged, droved, and chamfered.

The front elevation features a symmetrical arrangement of cottage fronts. The three central houses (Nos 7, 8, and 9) have a two-storey crowstepped tri-gable front, with a door and a four-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor. The same window is shortened to a one-light version on the first floor, complete with a hood moulding. The end houses (Nos 1 and 15) are styled similarly, featuring a five-light window on the ground floor and a four-light window above. The intermediate houses are arranged in two groups of five, each single-storey with an attic, and include a door and a tripartite window, with reversed plans for paired doors and windows. Above the gables are single timber tripartite dormers with bargeboards. There are slight alterations, such as No 5 being rendered and No 11 featuring a small open porch.

The end elevations have a door to the end cottages set in a forward bay. The east end has a single window at the rear on the ground floor and a small tripartite window centrally located on the first floor. The west end features two bipartite windows flanking the door, with one single window to the rear bay and a bipartite window above, topped with a crowstepped dormerhead that breaks the eaves.

The rear elevation has been much altered and is less distinguished. However, it retains crowstepped features and small dormers that complement the front. There are also low hipped outshots. The original doors were plain boarded with bipartite fanlights, but many have been altered. The windows are timber sash and case, originally designed with a four-pane over one configuration, though many have been changed. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate, and the symmetrical stacks on the ridge are original, made from snecked rubble with cavetto coping and six plain cans.
