West Gates, Amisfield Park

Earlier 18th century. Originally symmetrical group comprising gateway, screen walls and 2 gate lodges at main entrance to former Amisfield House (demolished).

WEST GATES: gatepiers in carved ashlar sandstone, tall and fluted with pulvinated bands, moulded copes and swagged urn finials. Curved quadrant screen walls, harled on outside with ashlar cope, to cushion-banded outer piers, straight links to lodges, single doorways.

WEST LODGE (N): 2-bay, 2-storey, upper storey foreshortened, harled and painted with raised margins, altered. To W elevation, 2 ground floor windows, enlarged to bipartite, 2 small windows to 1st. To S elevation, single windows to ground, modern bipartite window breaking eaves at 1st. Rear (E) irregular with large extension, lean-to extension to N.

AMISFIELD COTTAGE (S): 2-bay, 2-storey, upper storey foreshortened, harled and painted with raised margins. To W elevation, 2 windows symmetrically to each floor. 2 windows to S elevation, door and 3 to ground on E elevation and 2 windows to 1st. Flat-roofed extension behind screen wall to N.

Fenestration in timber sash and case, originally without horns, mostly 12-pane. Piended roofs in graded grey slate, each lodge with central stack, ashlar margins and moulded cope, 4 plain cans.
