Description
The George Hotel, located at 91 High Street in Haddington, is primarily an 18th century classical hotel building that may incorporate earlier elements from the 16th century. It features early 19th century castellated tower additions, along with further alterations from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and late 20th century extensions to the side and rear. The building has a complex S-plan layout and stands four stories tall, with a prominent projecting round tower at the head of the High Street that wraps around a separate corner building, creating a single bay elevation on the side with a Venetian window.
The main section has a mock painted bull-faced stucco render, with smooth rendered painted quoins and smooth painted render elsewhere, complemented by projecting cills. The principal east elevation facing the High Street consists of seven bays and features a large tapering crenellated tower that is offset to the center, along with a smaller tower located in the center left section along Brown Street Lane. There is a small squared entrance porch at the tower's re-entrant angle, with additional windows on the ground and first floors to the right. The crenulated tower is capped and has a dentilled cornice, pointed arched windows with decorative trefoil astragals, and raised, stone-patterned render on the main section.
At the rear, there are bowed window bays and two large two-storey late 20th century extensions: one to the north of the principal elevation extending to the rear, and another to the southeast rear corner featuring a rounded stair tower, which together form a U-plan courtyard to the rear on Hardgate. The windows throughout predominantly feature a 4 and 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case. The entrance door is a six-panel timber design. The roofs are slated, with pantiles used for the 20th century sections, and there are large rendered stacks along with one reconstructed ashlar stone stack.
The interior, which was not seen in 2013, includes a ballroom and anteroom designed ensuite, showcasing plain Grecian plasterwork from around 1820 and a curved coffered ceiling.
