Description
1 New Winton Cottages, located in New Winton, date back to the earlier 19th century. This group consists of three sets of single and two-storey cottages that are symmetrically arranged around a green area. The cottages are constructed from sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings.
The northern group, numbered 1 to 7, features a pair of two-storey, two-bay cottages that are slightly advanced at the center. These cottages have outer first-floor windows that break the eaves in gabled dormers, with doors paired at the center (one of which is blocked) and a forestair at the rear. Flanking each side are two single-storey cottages, each with a door at the center flanked by windows. Additionally, there are two further single-storey cottages on the return wing to the north by the roadside to the west.
The eastern range, numbered 8 to 16, includes two paired, two-storey, wider two-bay cottages at the center. These have gabled dormerheads over bipartite windows at the center of the first floor, featuring a blank shield, and dormerheads for the outer windows. A modern double porch is located at the center. There are four three-bay single-storey cottages flanking each side, with two on the outer left stepped down, and the outer right cottage has been altered to serve as a garage and store. Modern porches have been added to cottages numbered 8, 13, and 14.
The southern group, numbered 17 to 23, forms a U-plan arrangement. The range facing the green to the north is detailed similarly to the northern group. There are two single-storey cottages facing the roadside, connected by a single linking bay to the northern cottage. The southern range of the U-plan mirrors the elevation to the green of the eastern range but has only two single-storey cottages flanking each side and three blocked doors.
The cottages display a variety of glazing patterns, including some lying-pane, some four-pane, and some modern sash and case or casement windows. Pantiles have been retained and renewed on certain cottages. The two-storey cottages feature crowstepped gables and beak skewputts, while the ends facing the roadside have piend roofs and coped skews at the dormerheads. The cottages also have coped ends and mutual gable stacks, some of which have been repaired in brick.
